Fish That Live In Caves

To most fishkeepers the term Cave fish brings to mind the Mexican Cave tetra that originates in cave systems in the Mexican Province of San Luis Potosi and which are no bred in their thousands for the aquarium trade. In fact the commercially bred fish out number the wild ones many thousand fold. We understand from the late Howard Preston who collected fish in Mexico that there is an armed guard on the entrance to the caves to safeguard the fish within.

There probably about 170 species of fish that permanently live in total darkness in caves around the world and is expected that the number of species will rise to about 200 in the not too distant future.
